It’s that time, Christmas time is here 🎶
Bonus points if you know what Christmas movie that is from. It’s a classic and always on repeat in this household.
Let’s talk about bringing Christmas cheer to your math block with math Christmas Activities. December is hard because there are not many school days and there are LOTS of activities. Christmas programs, school plays, sing alongs, Christmas traditions, Christmas shopping, the list goes on and on. The little humans sitting in our classrooms are eager and excited for Christmas. Rightfully so, I am 26 and still get way too excited for Christmas. One way to manage the chaos is instead of trying to control it, is to join it. This is my same end of the year motto. I’m going to give you some math Christmas activities that you can use today to join in on the chaos of Christmas season in the classroom.
**Disclaimer** I ensure that all students in my classroom celebrate Christmas before breaking out Christmas activities, if you have a class who doesn’t all celebrate Christmas you should check out this post and these Winter Themed Math Activities.
1. Tree Decorating
Tree Decorating is a great way to get students practicing representing numbers which is a huge deal in primary grades. This lays the foundation for their place value knowledge. Students match the correct ornaments to each Christmas Tree. I love using velcro dots so they can actually connect the ornaments to the tree.
2. Santa’s Helpers
Santa’s Helpers is one of my students favorite math Christmas activities and it’s so simple! Santa’s helpers are hiding some numbers from us and we have to find out which ones. This is a great way for students to work on number patterns and sequences within 120.
3. Reindeer Games
Reindeer Games is a great way to get students working on subtraction fluency within 20. Each reindeer card has a different subtraction problem on it for students to solve. Once they solve the problem they match the reindeer to the correct sleigh.
4. Stocking Stuffers
Stocking Stuffers is a great activities to help students with finding missing addends up to 20. Each fireplace has a stocking with a missing number on it. Students have to find out which number is missing to complete the equation and stuff the stocking.
