Why Craft in the Elementary Classroom?

Before, I dive into all of the fun in our craft kits I want to express how important crafting is in the elementary classroom. Crafting has many many benefits in the elementary classroom. To start, elementary students are still kids. They are still developing their creativity, learning their interests and deserve to have fun learning. Crafts are a great way to encourage all 3 of these things.

Second, crafting is great fine motor practice. In one craft project you can practice cutting, glueing, layering objects, grips, pinches, and more. That makes craft projects great for fine motor development in our students. Third, crafting is great for practicing independent work. In primary grades, students are still learning to work independently and crafting is an amazing way to promote independence. Many students have crafted before and are comfortable with the idea. This allows them to practice new skills (working independently) with familiar skills (craft projects). It is also a great time for you to introduce your work expectations during a low pressure activity.

Finally, our students are kids. We are setting them up for success in school, a great way to do that is by making learning fun. These craft projects pair great with various standards. You can teach the content you need and assess students understanding while completing a fun activity! It is a win-win-win.

5 Elementary Craft Ideas

Okay, now that you are convinced I am going to give you a sneak peek at 5 of my favorite elementary crafts within these monthly craft kits.

In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb

This spring craft may be my favorite craft because it makes the cutest bulletin board display. Depending on my class and their capabilities I love spicing this one up with ribbon curling for the lions mane and cotton balls to create the lamb. I have even turned this one into a puppet by attaching a popsicle stick.

Sea Turtle

This one of one of my favorites for summer school. Each year for summer school I do an under the sea theme. Meaning everything we do is ocean themed. Each day we study a different ocean animal, take a virtual field trip, have themed activities and conclude our day with a craft. This is my favorite craft for sea turtle day!

First Day Feelings

This craftivity is my favorite first day of school craft. It is super simple and pairs great with any back to school/first day of school read aloud. Students pick an emotion for how they are feeling on their first day of school and illustrate that feeling on their pencil. Once completed, you can show students how to fold the pencil to conceal the feeling, creating a fun hide and seek craft.

The Haunted Hand

October is one my favorite craft kits! This haunted hand craft is always a student favorite. It is a great keepsake because it shows the size of your students hand at the time of creating. Students can use the included pieces to design their haunted house as spooky as they dream!

Halloween Craft

The Classic Snowflake

Snowflakes are a classic for the holiday/winter season. This snowflake is nothing special but it makes a great classroom decoration or bulletin board accent. I love sprucing this one up by letting student tear/glue paper, qtip paint, or use bingo dabbers to create their snowflake. I have hung them from the ceiling in our classroom, used them on our door, and added them to a winter hallway display!
